Ceramic, 2015 - In progress
Bronze, Neon. Fire: 10"x10"x6", Water: 10"x5"x7" 2015
This is part of an ongoing study of the interactions of cast metal and neon, particularly colors and forms that seem to evoke relationships between fire and water, and the physical results of that relationship of opposites.

The Crab Tree Farm Sound Wave was recorded in the spring of 2014, when my Foundry class took a tour of the farm. I took the recording in the courtyard where the SAIC Foundry holds its annual iron pour every spring. Over the year between the tour and the next pour, I sculpted an original and took a sand mold of the form. During the 2015 annual pour, I was finally able to cast the sound that I had recorded in the same courtyard the year before.

Neon pixelation is an exploration of the qualities of neon and black acrylic for providing a calming and relaxing atmosphere as a counterpoint to our fixation with screens and other distracting technology.

Salvage was originally an experiment in using jagged slabs of clay to disrupt the seamless monotony of traditional vase forms. However, during the firing, the bottom of the base fused with the kiln shelf. While I was trying to remove the kiln shelf, a section of the piece cracked off, leaving a gaping hole in the bottom. In an attempt to salvage the piece, I cast a bronze piece to replace the missing segment, again evoking Japanese Kintsugi.

A further exploration of neon and black acrylic for a calming and relaxing atmosphere, arranged in a more organic and randomized pattern to further pull away from screen technology.

Porcelain, wood fired. 14"x14"x12" 2015
This piece was in a wood firing, when the shelf it was on collapsed, causing the vase to fall over and get stuck between the wall of the kiln and a lower kiln shelf. Because it was wedged right over the firebox, the vase got a heavy coating of ash, giving it a unique and dynamic glazing and coloration.
Woodfire kiln unloading, Ox-Bow 2015
This was the surprise that awaited me as we were opening the kiln the morning it had cooled down. Unfortunately we also discovered that a few other pieces had either fallen off the shelf, or had been knocked aside when my vase rolled over. This lead to more than a few broken pieces, and me apologizing for my vase's unhappy path.

Neon sound is simply a recording of the spoken names of the three primary lighting gasses used in commercial neon making. Neon and argon are the main gasses, but mercury is added to argon to create the bright blue in the bottom piece. There are other noble gasses that also light up in tubes, but they are impractical for commercial neon lighting.

Fire and Water is a series exploring the tendencies for fire and water to mix violently and create startling results, specifically evoking volcanic island formations such as those in Hawaii, which signifies an everlasting competition between creative fires and erosive waters. this is the second iteration of the idea.
